I’ve been reading an excellent book by Rob Bell called, “Sex God“. He explains agape love like this: “Love is often seen as a need, something we get from others. Agape is the opposite. Agape gives.” (page119).

Love that gives, and gives and gives. Sounds like the love of a parent. Although we aren’t perfect in that giving. I know for me, I also ‘get’ love from my girls. Well,  today, the giving hit a wall for me. Today I was frustrated with all the ‘giving’ and really wanted some ‘getting’. The giving was really tough. I was a little bitter and frustrated.

Bell says these words…

Agape doesn’t love somebody because they’re worthy.

Agape makes them worthy by the strength and power of it’s love.

Agape doesn’t love somebody because they’re beautiful.

Agape loves in such a way that it makes them beautiful….agape doesn’t need a reason.

Are there people in your life who are not worthy of love or are seemingly not beautiful?  Are there times when the giving is tough? Agape those precious ones. Remember that we too are unworthy and ugly aside from the love and grace of God. After a little perspective I am ready to aspire to a love that keeps going…

Love never gives up.
Love cares more for others than for self.
Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have.
   Love doesn’t strut,
   Doesn’t have a swelled head,
   Doesn’t force itself on others,
   Isn’t always “me first,”
   Doesn’t fly off the handle,
Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others,
   Doesn’t revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,
   Puts up with anything,
   Trusts God always,
   Always looks for the best,
   Never looks back,
But keeps going to the end.

We are the bride of Christ. Loved.
